My Ancestors was an Apprentice

A guide to apprentice sources for family historians

Stuart A. Raymond (2010) 128 pages

ISBN 978 1 907199 03 5

Between the sixteenth and the nineteenth century, everyone who wanted to practise a trade had to serve an apprenticeship. Consequently, we all have apprentices amongst our ancestors, and could find a great deal of information about them if we knew where to look. A wide variety of sources survive. These include apprenticeship indentures and registers, stamp duty registers, freemen's registers, borough court and guild records, and many other documents. These sources are available in many record offices; a few are online.

Hitherto, there has been no adequate guide to these records. This book remedies that situation. Stuart Raymond, who is well known for his numerous handbooks and guides for genealogists, begins by outlining the history of apprenticeship. He then takes you through the wide variety of sources that are available, explaining where you can find them, what information they contain, and how you can use them. This book offers many clues to those who wish to trace their apprentice ancestors.
